Azad quits as Jammu and Kashmir CM

08 July 2008 Srinagar : Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad resigned on Monday without facing a trust vote in the assembly.

Azad announced his resignation after concluding an emotional 130-minute speech in the Assembly ahead of the crucial floor test.

Accepting his resignation, governor N N Vohra asked him to continue till "an alternative arrangement is made".

The government was reduced to a minority 10 days ago after ally People’s Democratic Party (PDP) withdrew their support over the land transfer to the Amarnath shrine board.

Azad’s exit has paved the way for the likely imposition of governor’s rule, which will make its way back to the state after 12 years.
