Speaker Somnath Chatterjee expelled from CPI(M)

23 July 2008 New Delhi : Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee was on wednesday expelled by the CPI(M).

A Polit Bureau statement said that the Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) has unanimouisly decided to expel Somnath Chatterjee from the membership of the party with immediate effect.

The party invoked Article 19 (13) of its constitution to expel him under summary procedures without any notice on the charge of "seriously compromising" the party position.

Somnath Chatterjee, a 10-term MP, joined CPM in 1968. Chatterjee was first elected to Parliament from Bardhamaan in 1971. In 1977, he moved to the Jadavpur constituency. Mamata Banerjee, then with the Congress, defeated him there in 1984. It was the only defeat that Chatterjee ever suffered in his long career. Chatterjee was the leader of the CPM parliamentary party from 1989 to 2004 and won the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award in 1996. In March 2004 he won from Bolpur in West Bengal, a seat he held since 1985. He was unanimously elected as Speaker of the 14th Lok Sabha on June 4 2004.

The Congress on Wednesday hinted that it would like Somnath Chatterjee to continue as the Speaker of Lok Sabha even after his expulsion from the CPI-M.
